Day 10
5:10 pm – 6:05 pm

i might imagine

Her hands around a frozen chicken carcass
or sifting through flour, cocoa, and broken pieces
of a half pound bar of chocolate with hazelnuts

Her hands in a happy fist underneath her chin
sitting next to her father watching reruns of
Julia Child or any of the lesser cooking shows

Her hands adding butter to the richness each dish
deserves in homage to the words of her queen and
the black and white episodes of her youth

Her hands extending a healthy heap of sweets
to the mouth of her love who complained through
wretched grateful moans and bitter cries for more

Her hands slide a straw up and down through
the plastic cover of her iced tea as she reminisces a
practice at rest for a busy schedule of transience

Her hands make one imagine the attention for every
task those fingers have faced ever since, edible or
otherwise, maybe they have been less loving as

Her hands quietly long for a moment when time and
place permitted for the intimacy reserved for her love
of preparation, of prodding, of the experimentation that

Her hands came close to mastering or so it seemed
to the people closest to her, the ones she yearned to
feed, the ones with dripping mouths who looked to

Her hands with feeble reserve and transparent hunger
at what sustenance she surely gifted them, surely
to the point where their eyes look at

Her hands differently these days, with sweet
recollection, with longing, with resentment, with utter
despise for what they have surrendered, surely

Her hands are ones of wonder, for her memories, for
the friends who no longer benefit from the same reward, for
those who can only wonder what they might provide
