Day 58
12:01 am – 1:25 am

city legs

the City is the big idea
where breath sharply leaves our bodies
as we barely hear our own footsteps
against the buzz of electricity, of enterprise

It is a place of the bizarre
the where to be overwhelmed
a space of the modern replacing the modern
with an aesthetic willfully fading from tradition

Give me something, I think
in the City is where my expectation asks constantly
for more and less simultaneously in impatience
I want to control it only because it consumes me

the Country is the nostalgic dream
where my tired city heart longs to breathe deeply
as I listen to gravel, sand, or leaves underneath my feet,
against a backdrop of natural light, of a relieved sky

It is a place of simple time
the where to be overtaken by beauty
a space to run in to strangers and be led back to their
dwellings for honest cups of tea and humble conversation

It is a place for city legs
to stretch long enough to remember
what sitting still can do,
how loosened joints can feel

But, Yes. It is a temporary space
for stiff reflection where
There lies a tugging, a longing
for city energy, for city speed

Give me the city in the country, the country in the city
it is for a city girl to be in the country,
just long enough
I yearn for a place that I want to leave

It is not for a physical space,
but the beats in my heart
that thrive comfortably
in longing, in restlessness

Thank the city for the country,
the country for the city
The breath shall arrive with depth,
even in shallow stints

Let the elsewhere
be ever present
