Day 96
8:42 pm – 10:00 pm

my friend Parry is allergic to shrimp

i remember long ago
him telling us he could

not eat a single piece of
shrimp without becoming

swollen and completely
drawn of breath

for years i’d think of Parry
while biting into one

or when i’d feed Kitti shrimp by hand

we’d watch him slobber and
become wild in his hunger

by the time Kitti
was 15 years old and

barely able to eat we
bought bags of shrimp

every other week as if
the vet bills were of no

matter to my diminishing
checking account

i watched a beautiful play last night

there was a line in it
about a girl who said

even when she is sick
she can eat shrimp

Parry’s allergic reactions
flashed through my mind

just before my world caved in again

i could not recall what Kitti ate
during his final couple weeks of life

i just remembered being
gone during most of that time

there is an old bag of shrimp
still in the back of the refrigerator

i can’t get rid of it
