Day 116
11:38 pm – 12:03 am

lights

the beautifully painted sign said
Jesus is the Reason for the Season

the only straightforward billboard
in the uber-lit,
ultra-decorated neighborhood
of west Torrance
in the eighties,
and
what a relief to see it

i had already made peace
with the disappearance of Santa
from my childhood
and the emphatically,
much more harsh
discovery
that no one was interested
in my little campaign
to spread the truth

who wouldn’t want to know the truth?
was the thought
of that little gyrl

so bring it, i figured,
musing on things like
belief,
as we all rode along
in the painfully slow
line of cars
through that suburban display
of a surely colossal
community electricity bill

i always knew i could agree
with a Christian neighbor
who might have preferred
i didn’t celebrate
the 25th at all
if for the wrong reason
