Day 127
9:49 pm – 10:18 pm

everything must be easy

“everything must be easy”

this was their mantra
their religion
and what got them
paid in full
at the back of the lobby

so they planted beans,
wheat, and corn

and so we could track
their progress
they gave us
little stickers to collect
with funny sayings
like fat-free, diet, and
no trans fat

sooner than later
labels became streamlined
and easy to read,
same ingredients headlining
the top three
in 4 out of 5
on every shelf

go cornfields!

it seemed to make sense
see, stick, eat, repeat
and we said
keep going,
this is how it should be

didn’t seem to matter
that every kid’s throat
started closing up
at the sight
of a peanut butter
rice krispie treat

because, like they said,

“everything must be easy”

they even made t-shirts
