Day 130
2:02 am – 3:02 am

2010

we saw the world

in between fights over Piglet
just upstairs from the weekly
poker-game clouds of 70’s smoke

P.Y.T., Whip It, Funkytown, and
The Wall, all part of the soundtrack
to back room dance contests

and once we gave Chewbacca and
Wonder Woman a rest, it was
off to the recording booth

cassette tapes pinky-cued to make
the most of our home grown
radio station time

in homage to KDAY, i insisted
on KTRA, and some kind of
ballad we could all sing along to

we knew the year 2010 wouldn’t look
anything like the Jetsons because
they didn’t look anything like us

but we knew we’d eventually fly,
whether or not with the aid of a car,
we just knew we would be transported

by this time, we’d have figured out
how to make sure everyone on the
planet was eating, clothed, and jovial

every year would host the Olympics
and i could make the athletes tiny
spinach cakes from my mini bake oven

we’d have access to each others’
closets, all the gummy bears we could eat,
and hand-me-down swaps would be king

we’d skip the pledge of allegiance at school,
there would be no need for labels or grades
and all tests would be in essay form

poems would be in each mailbox
every single day and we’d have all hours
to write them and fold them in to frogs

friends would be friends everywhere in the
world and we’d travel to each other by making
circular knobs in the carpet with our fingers

our dance contests would bring a ton
of food and everyone over to the house
and every one would have every thing

and we never talked much about what
we did not want, did we?
we just made what we wanted happen

oh, we can still see the world
and yes, we were just a few years off
so just a few years more, my friend

just a few more

what a beautiful poem tra! 🙂 Love the tone and the idea of KTRA haha

    this really resonated with me:
“and we never talked much about what
we did not want, did we?
we just made what we wanted happen”

round of applause for poems in the mailbox and folding them into frogs.

    anything like the Jetsons because
