Day 132
11:57 pm – 12:16 am

one week due

they say
your life
is going
to change

a new
a new
baby monitor
and no sleep
to offset the
shift to
the new

a good round
of jesting there
to warn you
of what is to
come from young
fathers standing
around the table

i have not yet
had to contemplate
the real stuff
for real

so i all see
are smiling, pensive faces,
fancy contraptions with
the tags still on,
and a full belly
that i wish
to sing
in to

baby mine, don’t you cry
baby mine, dry your eyes
rest your head close to my heart
never to part, baby of mine

all i can do is imagine

tiny fingers,
a new cry,
and the first time
two parents will
release a
carefully considered
in to the air
to meet the breath
of their newborn child

i will hold the name
in a hush upon
our introduction
and whisper
a song to him

little one, when you play
pay no heed what they say
let your eyes sparkle and shine
never a tear
baby of mine
