Day 173
6:17 pm – 6:44 pm

Matias

those birds
had nothing
to say in retort

no way
with that
unflinching eye contact
of yours
and the questions
you posed on
their
migration patterns

patriot police
were surely
sitting there
dumbfounded
wondering
how you
got so smart

weren’t you
the one
who was
supposed to be
ignorant
and completely
taken aback
by this,
ahem,
situation?

but you
stood up straight
i’ll bet you
even cracked a
smile
fusing a connection
somewhere in
their heads
without them
knowing
you just
knocked them
off their
branches

you
keep your head up

as we swallow
down
watering eyes
while
watching you
hold up the sky

as we commit
to keeping our
eyes open,
minds sharp,
stances ready,
with a promise
we will never
have to say
we miss you
