takes care of his,
calls her by no
other name,
makes her feel
sane for being
crazy about him

it was fine
everything was good
so you thought
so did i

until on that train ride
when we woke to find my
heart had leapt out to
hitchhike with another

no, it’s not fair
and yes,
i am sure i don’t know
how it happened

grow in the backyard
and each season
she says
Double Delights were his favorite

he was probably
happy to know
certain things
would keep
growing because of him
