Day 252
11:43 pm

Bachan’s face

every morning
i pat the lines beneath my right eye
and can’t reconcile their growth
with the admiration i held
for my Bachan and her skin

her lovely weathered face
of a thousand wrinkles
each one representing
ten thousand smiles
and bouts of laughter,
oh, that booming
hacking cough
of a laugh
she had

above and parallel
with her upper lip
she had a line
so deep
i would stare it
with wonder
on where it came
from, when it began
to take shape and how her
face seemed to form
itself around that

i study my face
the way i studied hers,
but with much less
