Day 272
1:22 am

casualties of oil wars

a screaming bird ate the bottle
cap for her half-winged sister
thinking it was a hearty crouton
that would sustain them later

but petroleum generals had
another idea when it came to
the sustainability of beings
roaming the earth for treats

they thought to let the birds
regurgitate their surroundings
fill their bellies with remnants
and waste away for good

then their problems would be
solved, no one to clean nor
anything to clean up after the
mess of themselves

go about their business, killing
work and dreams and people
industries and birds and fish
and all loving, living things

the bird sisters knew this even
while swallowing trash into
their tummies, but they could
not help themselves

nothing else was around
and they were hungry
