Day 335
9:35 pm

knowing sisterhood

every time
she saves me

she is
who she is
she needs to

i don’t fuck with

knows herself well
and understands

and who is

smart girl of color
walking down
Tenth Avenue
with old Chucks
and new earphones

i see her sometimes
in my day sleep
and morning dreams

knows how to speak
and she’s the better
of all of us
for the sake
of the other

that’s the song
she sings
when she hears me
think aloud on how i
always wished
i had a sister

chris’ first Obon

went along and danced
saw the difference from his church
he loved the bingo

like Day of the Dead

when a friend comes
along to their first Obon
i always explain
“it’s like Day of the Dead”

we quickly eat
Okinawa dango and
corn and chili rice
and spam musubi
and udon
while scoping out
the next thing we
want to stick in our

Obon is not so much a
time of ancestral worship
but more like
paying homage to
those who’ve passed
by doing the things
they liked doing when
they were alive

eating dango and
corn and chili rice
and spam musubi
and udon while
scoping out the best
spot for joining in on
the bingo

and we dance

i look for familiar
eyes and wonder
if the old people
there knew my dad
and remember his
smile when he danced
the tanko bushi

i watch my friends
laugh at themselves
as we struggle
through unfamiliar
dance steps in a
large oval formation
among hundreds of

so happy we are to
finally get the steps
just as the song

we keep dancing
and laughing and

i hold those last few
moves of the final song
and feel the collective
breath we breathe
alongside the
spirits of the dead
