Day 31
2:30 pm

fire like grace

in my step,
my words,
my story,

i wish
for

grace

i have been searching

open palmed reverence
cupping the outside
of concrete structures
with ivory rooftops

i have been looking

through cellophane
crystalline windows,
prophecies of the
university gods
that never belonged
to me no matter how
hard i tried to fit them
into my oversize red
blazer come
Monday morning
at 8:45 am

i have been reading

awards
and
fellowships
and
applications
and
programs
with
debt
so long we
will want to forget
where we were when
we
began

(in the wrong places
i know
in the wrong places
i see
in the wrong places
you keep telling me
i need to stop
looking, make
pause
happen)

it is equal parts
valid study
and the
trappings of
a plastic canon

it is the countenance
of retreat
for the sake
of
traipsing
the
roads
to Their fancies
of dreams in isolation

it is the promise
of residency
even
when
you
already
have a home

what
is
gracious
is
often mistaken
for what is merely
meant to
subdue

and that is where we meet

i
too
do
not
want
gentle
or comfortable

i want
heat

(pulses! breath! heaving!)

give me

skin as shield
tears as truth
heart as path

i want the challenge of
flame,
uncontrollable
energy whipping energy

i want

unafraid

for it

dances

voice like shouting
movement like running
body like stretching

if i could not find footing
it is
only because
i was not looking for the
You
who was already looking for
Me

it is
here
we find
us like substance

sister like mirror
work like weekends
struggle like unity

warmth of faces turned
from the pit to make
looks
looking toward each
other
eye contact
on
purpose

studying more so
we may bring
us
to
each
other

practicing better so
we may act
quicker
acting quicker so
we may move
better
moving better
so we may be
wiser

i have only learned this by the grace of

people

there is grace like fire

sway like embracing
laughter like tears
leaps like marching
justice like peace
energy like fighting
blood like sisterhood

there is grace

lifts like rising
air like passion
turns like collection
earth like home
tapping like education
water like freedom

fire like grace
fire like grace

there is fire

in

grace
