Day 46
1:05 am

Between assessment and mourning

Sometimes
it is a matter of
taking out a checklist
or looking for the
shovel

There
is

He didn’t, he wasn’t, he
never, he wouldn’t, he
said, he should have

and

There
is

i
miss
him

We
stand
to the side
near the mound
of earth

or

We
brush ourselves
like crumbs
into the
open grave

There
is
no planning for
who shows up first,
the heart or the brain

Today
happened to be
a day of permission
so I will likely
crawl right in

Tomorrow
and so many
days to follow
are sure to be
much less forgiving

But
leave me alone
tonight if you have
any grievance over my
grieving

I
plan to do nothing
but spoon my father’s
casket and talk story
to his ashes
