Day 66
12:11 am

what will matter more

Give me an announcement of your love
in front of all, then throw me a big party
so I can walk around with a big piece
of dripping red velvet cake in my left
hand, cream cheese frosting on my
lower lip until you come and kiss it off

Give me unkempt hair and a nasty
dress dancing in slippers by the end
of the night, because no one will care
about the mess or the broken heels
or the weird picture-taking session
with sore cheeks or the relatives you
barely know who asked to bring friends
who don’t know you

I don’t need the marriage or the
certificate, I just want the party and
the starter gifts, and the loud music,
and all of our friends, and a buffet of
cakes from around the city, Angel
Maid, Fortune, Sweet Lady Jane,
King’s, Phoenix and Porto’s, and
your love, big proclamations of your
joy in loving me, that’s all I believe I
need today

Maybe someday I will change my
mind altogether and ask for much
more, like a proclamation of forever
and marriage sealant and a cement
monogamy cocoon and all those
things that make me shudder just
a little today, maybe they will be
everything that will matter to me
tomorrow
