Day 72
8:23 pm

71

happenstance,
ankles and skin cracks,
another year, no more candles
for they’d just be a nuisance and a
fire hazard, and you’ve always been too
careful to delve into silly for the sake of silly,
but maybe that is exactly the medicine you need,
the wind breaking from your face, laughing wildly no
matter where we choose to celebrate your birthday over
lunch, better yet, let’s go somewhere stodgy and Rolling Hills
Estates-like, state for once that you are no one’s wife, you are
not even anyone’s mother, here you are and earned the right
to say it, damn it, because seventy one comes with more,
it must come with so much more, than just decades of
grief and shit lists to look back on, perhaps now is a
time better than ever to burn the files you have
kept laden with grudges, let go of everything,
the bullets and bulls eyes, for you must be
a child underneath all of that beautifully
aging angst, this is the time to retire
that gumption to stay inside, yes,
please, say now what you will, I
will actually try to listen with
no pride, no prejudice, no
sighs, no hesitance
