Day 81
11:47 am

Scale – 5 – sanity

between two poles,
like toothpicks from a distance,

we know this shore

we wrap yarn around one end
and tape it with masking tape

to the other

the atmosphere is moist
the tape continues to fall

but we run back and forth,

from the calm
on the flat sand,

to the place between the poles

where we pace to and from
pressing harder each time

hoping to conquer the inevitable

long measuring tape
begins to wrinkle,

yet again,

between our fingers,
but we try

until, maybe lightning, or tidal wave

some thing, shows up to stop us
from the love of our spin

maybe thunder, or swell or boil

some thing finally comes,
some things finally pause

and we learn how to begin

only then do we know what it is,
what leaving the race feels like

but it is thanks to those poles

and the leaving
and only then
