Day 112
11:58 pm

Road Joy

i’ve heard the enthusiasts and environmentalists

say

Bicycles could change Los Angeles

enter: Bogota Ciclovia

i get it.
don’t have to ride a bike to know
70 miles of streets closed to cars
once a week could be a lovely thing

red flag: the day we start talking about
the abolition of automobiles altogether

yes.

it is a red flag.

not for the sake of balance.
not for the parents toting kids.
not even for the sake of this city’s
reputation of unhappy drones
sitting in traffic, exhaust fighting
with the sky
and, oh, the frustration!
the madness!
the guns and middle fingers!
the Road Rage!

but for the selfish
little ladies like me

who

Love

their

car

The privilege of loose schedules
and malleable pathways
make way with history
and alleys
who all come together and
beg me

to investigate the little glories,
the chamber moments in my car
for the soundtrack!
the orchestration!
the score!

for every page, poem and story,
realized

for this city who beckons me to explore her
from the foot of the 405 to the neck of the 118
galavanting on the 2 or the 22, the 605 or the 60,
dive past the 210 or relax in to home on the 110

to love this city for its sprawl and rendezvous
with her every inch at any moment, without hesitation

it is no small thing,
this love between me and the drive.

this love-lust reverence
for my life lived with
my car

for some, it is a haven
and not a trap

this passion behind my wheel,

this is
joy

pure joy

Road Joy
