Day 165
2:09 pm

survival – chain reaction

We stand here.

Watching our televisions,
Listening to the radio,
Communicating in
Meetings and over lunch,
Hands on hips,
Cupping mouths.

So far from the revolution
In Egypt but feeling
The surge stretch its
Arm throughout the

Syria, Iran, Bahrain
Are digging
Wishes from time capsules…

Are we barely getting started?

I remember when I was 20
And a Trotskyist
Asked me what I was,

He didn’t want to hear my name
As the answer.

Was I MLM?
Was I Socialist?

Revolution is a right around the

He said man.
More interestingly though, he said

I said
I’m many things, Socialist,
Leftist, Feminist,
but I think we have a
long way to go.

Fast forward some 17 years
And the word dribbles
Trembles and
Drips from my lips

We can say the word

WCC Day 12 – Week 2: Language is a Place of Struggle, letters
for the Women’s Creative Collective Writers’ Workshop

Dear Tongue,

I want straight teeth.

This is not just vanity.

I hear the hiss from the tooth just left of center. I hear him butting up
against you and frankly I’ve had all I can take of that.

You, my dearest, are my speaking companion and you’re all I’ve got.

When we go out there, we go out there together and I need us to be smooth with our words, every word! I want to proclaim every poem with clear sound!! Always!!! Do justice to words. We are just the vessel and have to do our job, Tongue!!!!

Maybe this is vanity.

But please do your part.

With love,
