Day 193
3:40pm; 9:38 pm

(for the Writer’s Workshop Symposium;
Allan Aquino’s writing workshop, Day 1)

at the foothill of my college years,
he greeted me with marooned lips
and a svelte torso zipped tight into
expensive taffeta, another casualty
of overworked sewing machinations
to fill the greasy pockets at the top

fierce rally organizer and chant leader
in formal dresses gone wrong, he
made no bones about showing
himself at their lavish doorstep to
spray his voice like bullets through
boutique windows, shattering the
glass with his voice, pinning the
clerks to their commissions and
sharpening the shoulders of patron
passersby who were less than privy
to the plight of their personal designer-
a.k.a.-local-low-wage garment worker

mortal monster with interminable
passion, no one suspected his body
would be less than indestructible
before he faced the mirror of an old
man, but we asked more of his body
than he could say no to and we
loved him for letting us steal his
every last ounce of time

we hate to admit there is a part of
his passing that leaves a hardened,
purple heart in our hands, one that
must remain there every time we
reach for heroes with our utterly
selfish wishes, begging them to
be super human and ageless, to
do more for us than we have ever
given them, or to do the impossible
and come back to save us from

an abandoned life greets me in my
sleep, I ask for forgiveness

(for John D, yet again)
