Day 198
11:31 pm

before her time

she was not built for the
convention of chairs

only the wooden keys where
she could emit fire, even behind
the barbs, the smoke and wind
of war, she was for music that
bled with joy from her bench

she was not meant to be housed
in a routine of planned bingo games
for dimes amidst the tapping of
bed pans, her seat was somewhere
else altogether

if only for the cracking open of her
mouth that we treated like books,
another story looped like a spindle
tied to another and yet another,
she held the rod

she was not for stretching, torso
bent back by electric dentist chair,
plunging into authorized medicines
meant to keep her going, was
she stripped of her beat?

perhaps a premature stillness,
heart failing her right there in that
appointment, bright as that last
light was mounted above her head,
she was not ready to sit
