1,488 or more blushes of spring

of finite brushes with the
nine of her lives,
of blind duty,
of doubt behind the lace
and spine,
of the hundreds of times she
buried her head,
of hopes drenched in
the mail she’d send,
of the soaring notes
the childrens’ children
would sing,

Emily closed her books before
the wind blew her swing
