Day 234
9:08 pm

first

They could be there,
flying on stand-by,
paying only the taxes
and airport fees because
someone in their immediate
family works for the airline

They could be there on a
honeymoon upgrade because
40 of their friends and family
bought tickets during the
promotion period in order to
get to their destination
wedding

They could be there because
this is their one time, that
one flight they saved up for
all their lives, because when
they were in their twenties
they promised each other they
would splurge someday, just
once

They could be there because
some wealthy CEO of an
engineering firm twisted
their arm at the gate, convincing
them to trade seats so he could
slum it up for once in coach
and check off the last item on
his bucket list

Even with these thoughts
swirling in my head
suggesting that I conjure
up the benefit of the
doubt, in my worst moments,
I find myself rushing through
the first rows, triumphantly
withholding my eye contact,
thinking,
you suck, you suck, you suck
