before we realize death – Sight

1. Sight

There was a moment

When a hit on the head by an
unannounced object
From across the room at the hands
of a sibling means more than pain

The object arrives to conjure the
The arrival presents itself at an
inconvenient time

And a child realizes, here, was a
knock to the head
And it hurt, and there could be
more of that, hurt

Other people saw, but I didn’t
see it coming
This, embarrassment, this, hurt,
came quickly

It is where the child is introduced
to the cousin of death, pain and
The unknown, so sudden, we become
attached to what we can see
