Excavation – 10

10. The What. = Center Divider.

.

.

Santa Barbara, circa 2008.

She said to me,
Dennis said he’s been
thinking of ways to do it.

I told him I just don’t
want anything painful.

We were driving down the
101 from two days on
something called
“vacation.”

Quality time.

The kind that comes with
conversations on deep,
important issues,

I think once I figure out
a way that’s not painful, I’m
going to do it.

like suicide.

I should have done it, right
there, swerved from the
middle lane at 85 miles
per hour and head straight
into the center divider.

That wouldn’t have hurt at
all.

Quick and easy, like those
words, off the shoulder of
a mother, to split the core
of a daughter who had no
other ideas for the use of
those words.
