Excavation – 15

15. Mushrooms

Roaming through Amsterdam,
we were superheroes with
super hearing powers, tasting
fifteen degree air with the tips
of our tongues, grabbing the
rainbows that shot out from
city street lights, nothing in
the way of a good laugh over
absolutely anything

She was this way,
in her twenties,
before marriage

One day with a new name
could change everything,
this is what she meant

Lips closed, remembrance of
twilight before it meant

Eyes open, plucking heels
outward to watch the
self dance alone

And ears,
Ears yearning to grow with
the heartiness of fungi,
an amusing mess of pattern
with whimsy, with no

We shall all take our mothers
back to a time they’ve never
had, or did have once, long
before we were born
