she recalls the evening her tiny fingers had fumbled
with the zippers of her father’s duffel in response to
some weird question her mother had, it seemed
the right thing to do, look through his things
and defend her mother, but she had not
anticipated finding new words in there,
like suspicion and secret, words to
attach to her body like limbs,
carry like luggage packed
by a child who needs a
whole lot of armor,
until later, when
she is older
and can
try
to understand what this extra baggage is, to go back in and dig, so she may un-
zip
