Day 300
5:27 pm

road trip

1.

the sound of her steering wheel squeaking
as I make a left turn

me asking her if she wants to take a nap
for the fourth time

68 degrees on auto blast because she
gets hot easily

adjusting my coat over my lap because I
get cold easily

me asking her if she wants to take a nap
for the fifth time

her offering me another onigiri or piece
of panko chicken

me getting sleepy because of the constant
onset of food coma

maybe it is the length of the ride or simply
the road itself

secrets tumble from her mouth, throwing me
into potholes and speed bumps

either the car fills with maps that stream
from her mouth out of habit,

leading us on detours through the dingy streets
of her odd, dark past

or there is nothing at all for hours but the
repetition of road ritual

unsure which is better or worse, I just keep
driving, seeking destination
